Inveraray & District Pipe Band 2nd in 2014 World Champions

Inveraray & District have just taken second place at Grade 1 in the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green today, 16th August 2014. This is their highest ever placing, second to the positively imperial Field Marshall Montgomery Band from Northern Ireland.

Inveraray – second in each element in the qualifying rounds – and in a heat that did not include Field Marshall Montgomery, went on, in the final, to take the first place overall in the March, Strathspey and Reel element and 2nd place in the Medley.

At the end of the last element of the competition, the Medley, a quiet smile was seen to flit across the face of the band’s acclaimed Pipe Major, Stuart Liddell. He was obviously happy with how they finished. They had sounded fantastic – musical, subtle, nuanced, inventively but not showily orchestrated – all hallmarks of their Pipe Major.

Stuart Liddell has taken the band from its first appearance in 2005 to competition at the highest level in the world and now ranked second in the world  – in a speedy nine years. It is recognised as one of the most successful pipe bands in recent history.

Earlier this year, the Inveraray Band became European Champions, at Elgin.

With Steven McWhirter in charge of the Drum Corps, the band is led by two multiple World Champions in their respective disciplines.

Of the other Argyll bands, Kintyre Schools took 5th place in the Juvenile Grade; and Lomond & Clyde 4th at Grade 2 – with a lovely Medley.

Field Marshall Montgomery has now taken the World Championships for four years in a row; and today’s was the 10th World Championship won by its unparallelled Pipe Major, Richard Parks. The title of Champion of Champions for 2014 also returned across the Irish Sea, reflecting the best performance across the spectrum of all five major championships in the season.
